Am I eligible for the programme?

If you are a native English speaker you are in principle eligible for the programme. We are looking for people who are sociable and patient and would enjoy talking for up to 15 hours a day!

How do I apply for the programme?

First of all, have a look at the calendar section and select the dates for the programme you would like to attend. You should then fill-in the online registration form. We will get in touch with you within a few days and have a short telephone interview with you (in English). Within a few more days we will confirm whether you have been accepted for the programme or not and give you appropriate instructions.

Who are the Spaniards that take part in the programme?

Most of them are professionals that need to improve their English because of their jobs. Others just have a personal interest in improving their English. They come from different parts of Spain and have lots of stories to tell!

What type of accommodation do you offer?

Volunteers are accommodated in single ensuite rooms, full board. If you come as a couple, you will both share a double room.

What is the food like at the hotel?

There is a buffet breakfast. For lunch and dinner several menu options are offered, including desserts. There are also specific vegetarian options.If you have any special dietary requirements please let us know in the application form.

Will I have any free time?

You will have a few free hours every day: after lunch and after dinner. We will also go on a day tour one afternoon. See the programme in detail section for further information.

Is smoking permitted during the programme?

As a rule you are not allowed to smoke inside the hotel or any other enclosed areas. However, smoking is permitted on the terraces and outdoor cafés. Please bear in mind that Spain is still a smoke-friendly country and there is a chance that you will encounter situations where people around you will smoke.

Can I bring my partner, spouse, friend or relative?

Yes, but both of you must take part in the programme. If you bring a companion you will both share the same room. Nevertheless, please bear in mind that you may not be able to have lunch or dinner together, and you will spend most of your day apart.

How much does it cost to take part in the programme?

The programme is free for native English speakers (volunteers). We will pay for your food and accommodation. We also offer a transport service (see next questions). You do need to pay for your own plane / train ticket to the appropriate pick up point.

How can I get to the venue?

We offer a free transport service to the venue from a convenient nearby city.

  • Villajoyosa, Alicante: free transport from Alicante train station / bus station / airport
  • Monfragüe National Park, Extremadura: free transport from central Madrid
  • Mengíbar Palace, Andalucía: free transport from central Madrid
  • Mora de Rubielos, Aragón: free transport from Valencia train station

Please note you do need to pay for your own plane / train ticket to the appropriate pick up point

What do I need to bring with me?

You should bring comfortable, casual clothes. You can also bring swimming gear if you plan on using the outdoor swimming pool in Monfragüe or Villajoyosa (weather permitting!). You should also bring sunglasses. Of course you can bring your camera if you want to, and the hotels have free wireless Internet access so you can also bring a laptop / tablet. You should also bring all medication you may need during your stay. However there are some pharmacies in the area should you forget something (but please note that there could be medications you take that may not be found in a Spanish pharmacy).

I am a native Spanish speaker. Can I take part as a volunteer?

We promise Spanish speakers that all volunteers are native English speakers, so unfortunately the answer is no.

How much does it cost to fly to Alicante, Madrid or Valencia?

Several low-cost airlines fly to Alicante and Madrid from the UK and Ireland, so you can find some very good deals, especially if you buy your ticket in advance. You can check prices on Skyscanner.

A typical day at Estación Inglesa starts off with a buffet breakfast at the hotel to fuel us up for the day. After that we hold a short meeting to plan the day, and then the one-to-one conversations start, where you will speak in English with a Spaniard while you go for a walk or enjoy a coffee. The schedule will vary a little each day but here is a summary of what you can expect of a typical day at Estación Inglesa:

There will be a guided tour around the area, which will allow you to get to know the different monuments and customs of the town. You will also get some time off so you'll get the chance to visit the town, go for a walk or simply relax.

one-to-ones-9La enseñanza de inglés en España ha estado tradicionalmente orientada al aprendizaje de la gramática, descuidando, en general, los aspectos más comunicativos de la lengua: el listening y el speaking. Esto hace, en muchas ocasiones, que los españoles seamos capaces de leer un texto en inglés o escribir un email, pero que nos bloqueemos a la hora de tener una conference call o un encuentro cara a cara en inglés.

Nuestros cursos intensivos de inglés están enfocados a romper esa barrera de comunicación, y a que seas capaz de enfrentarte a situaciones reales en las que tienes que usar el inglés (reuniones, conversaciones telefónicas, conference calls, salidas al extranjero, etc).

¿Cómo lo hacemos?

Nuestros cursos de inmersión lingüística en inglés se basan en una convivencia intensiva entre un grupo de españoles y un grupo de nativos angloparlantes (ingleses, escoceses, americanos, etc.). En nuestros cursos siempre hay un nativo por cada participante español.

Todas las actividades que se desarrollan a lo largo del curso consiguen que los participantes estén continuamente hablando inglés.

Cada mañana del curso se realizan cuatro one-to-ones: conversaciones uno a uno entre un español y un nativo de una hora de duración. Esto conseguirá que "abras" el oido y ajustes tu inglés poco a poco hasta llegar a sentirte cómodo en una conversación en inglés.

Las actividades que se realizan por la tarde están orientadas a usar el inglés en situaciones reales. Conversaciones telefónicas, presentaciones, pequeños proyectos en grupos mixtos, etc. De esta manera lograrás cambiar el enfoque y pasar a ver el inglés como un instrumento en el que vivir y conseguir objetivos.

Los desayunos, comidas y cenas tienen lugar en mesas mixtas de españoles y nativos. Además, hay un sistema de rotación de tal manera que te sentarás con todos los participantes. Esto garantiza que se cree mucha unión y confianza entre los participantes, y mejorará enormemente tu listening y tus habilidades sociales en inglés.

Resultados

En total, hablarás más de 12 horas diarias de inglés real. En un programa semanal hablarás el mismo número de horas que conseguirías en un país angloparlante en una estancia de, al menos, dos meses.

Pero no se trata sólo del número de horas. Después de una semana conviviendo con nativos, mejorando tu listening y tu speaking y sintiendo que eres capaz de comunicarte, de empatizar y de divertirte en inglés, conseguirás un cambio cualitativo en tu relación con el idioma: romperás la barrera del inglés y lograrás ganar la confianza necesaria para comunicarte en inglés en cualquier situación.

Nuestros cursos intensivos de inglés se desarrollan en hoteles de cuatro estrellas seleccionados por su adecuación al programa. Los participantes se alojan en habitaciones individuales en régimen de pensión completa. También te proporcionaremos todos los materiales necesarios. Esto garantiza que durante el curso te sientas cómodo, desconectes de la rutina y puedas centrar tu esfuerzo, a lo largo de toda la semana, exclusivamente a mejorar tu inglés.
